In a rush to start your session?
Here are some quick fire hints & tips that are perfect to read through before you start your poker session and are also small enough that you don’t forget the earlier parts once you’ve reached the bottom. Perfect to help keep your game in tip top shape.
Raise Sizing - If you are the first to enter the pot then the most common raise size is usually 3 times (x) the big blind (BB). This isn’t gospel but it is by far the most used raise size. There are factors that should affect the size of your raise though, like if you have one or more limpers who have acted before you and you’d like to raise then you should consider making it more than 3x the BB. A good rule of thumb to use is to make it 3x plus an extra BB for every limper in the pot. For example, the blinds are 25/50 and you get two limpers before you act, you want to raise so you should consider making it 5x the BB to account for the two limpers. On this occasion you would raise to 250 (5x50). The reason for this is that if you just make it the usual 3x the BB then you are giving all of the limpers and the blinds incredible odds to call your raise therefore creating a multi-way pot. You never usually want a lot of players in the pot, especially with your big hands like AA or KK.
Blind Stealing - Blind stealing is a good way of keeping your stack size topped up while you wait for some playable hands, especially as the tournament progresses and the blind levels rise. If the action is folded to you on the button, it is a common move to raise almost any two cards as it is unlikely that either of the players in the blinds have a big hand. You will find that you will get a high percentage of folds in these situations. You do, of course, need to take into account the type of player that is in the small and big blind. For example, you might want to narrow your raising range if the big blind is a maniac and widen it if the big blind is a really tight player. Even if you are called then you always have the safety net of having position on your opponent(s). Steal those blinds!
